Memorial Mass for Michael Edward Cook, 70, of Coquille, will be held at 10:00am on Saturday, November 12, 2016 at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, 2250 16th in North Bend. Father Jim Graham will officiate.

Mike was born February 15, 1946 in Myrtle Point, to Thomas E. and Marvine A. (Phillips) Cook.  He died October 26, 2016 in Springfield.

Mike graduated from Bandon High School in 1965.  He served in the U.S. Navy from 1965-1969 doing one tour in Vietnam on River Boat Patrol as a Gunner’s Mate.

While in the Navy met and married his wife, Pat.  After the Navy, Mike worked for G.P. in Coquille until he was hired by the Coos County Sheriff’s Office in 1973.  Mike made Sergeant in 1976, and was assigned as the SWAT team leader in 1977.  He also worked Search & Rescue for several years, and was the handler for the Sheriff’s Office’s blood hounds.

Mike was appointed Sheriff by the County Commissioners in 1992 and was elected in 1994.  He retired in January 1999 on his doctor’s advice and at the urging of his family.

He is survived by his sister, Pam VanDolah; three daughters; Michelle Kirby, Kathleen Kirby, and Tamara Ulmer; three sons-in-law; Gregg Kirby, Nick Kirby, and Randy Ulmer; three grandchildren; Patricia Beers, Douglas Kirby, and Riley Kirby; his nephew Shon Cook and three nieces; Tobi Brown, Kristine Miller, and Debbie Medlin.  Also, a lot of little ones who called him Papa Mike.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents, and his wife Patricia M. Cook (Kiessel).

In lieu of flowers, Mike would’ve preferred a donation to the Tioga Sports Park Association.  He was pretty excited about this range.  Donations can be accepted at Umpqua Bank or can be mailed to 91487 Hill Rd, Coquille, OR  97423.

I went to high school with Mike and always considered him a friend. Mikways had that sweet smile and was always a kind person. I was in the class of 64 but in those days school classes were small and we were all friends. Having been out of the area for 33 years I had not seen Mike in a long time but keep up with some of my class mates and who was doing what. Mike was important to Coos Country. My deepest condolences.
