Steve was born on September 19, 1962 in Portola, CA to Melvin and Linda (Richbourg) Smith. He passed peacefully at home surrounded by family on October 18, 2022 due to ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease).
He grew up in Clovis, CA and moved to Happy Camp, CA as a teenager. He was a dedicated employee of 38 years at the Grey Eagle Mines in Happy Camp. He began as an equipment operator, became a water treatment plant operator and retired as the site manager in 2020. After retiring he moved to Coquille where he enjoyed and appreciated the community and close proximity to the Oregon Dunes. He loved motor sports especially NASCAR and was a proud fan watching his nephews and great nephews race dirt track and motocross. He also loved the outdoors, fishing, hunting, road trips with his camper and wilderness backpacking trips with his family. He was an avid consumer of his wife’s fine cooking.
Steve is survived by his wife of 25 years Francine, daughter Jamie Smith (Ezra), son Christopher Smith (Desirae), sister Patricia Hayes (Jerry), brothers Mike Smith (Elvia) and David Smith (Patty), four grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, stepfather Ken Ramage and sister Cynthia Falkenstein (Dan).
In lieu of flowers donations can be made in Steve’s name to the ALS Association Oregon and SW Washington Chapter or to South Coast Hospice.
