James (Jim) Churchill (93) of Coquille, Oregon, passed away on December 17, 2023.
Jim was born on December 15, 1930 to Clarence and Nettie Marie (Nelson) Churchill in Santa Barbara, California. The family moved to Oregon in 1934, settling in McKinley. He graduated from Myrtle Point High School in 1949 and attended Oregon State for two years until he was drafted into the Army in 1952. After he completed basic training, he attended NCO Training School and was later stationed in Austria during the Korean War. After discharge from the Army, he returned to McKinley and began his career in the wood products industry. He met Nancy Perrott of Coquille in February 1957 and they were married in August of that year, settling in Coquille. Jim and Nancy had two children, daughter Carrie and son Kelly. Jim logged during the first years of their marriage, then worked alongside Forest Hales surveying. In 1961, he went to work for Douglas Fir Plywood and after six months joined their Timber Department. Douglas Fir would later transition to Roseburg Forest Products. Jim worked as a timber cruiser, sale administrator and finally Timber Manager in Coquille. He retired in 1996 after 34 years with the company.
Jim was a member of McKinley Grange, Chadwick Lodge and Hillah Shrine Temple. He was very proud of his 60 year membership in the Masonic order. Jim served on the Coquille School Board in the early 1970’s and again in the 1990’s. He was a 4-H leader for the Coquelle Colts Horse Club while Carrie and Kelly were active in 4-H. After Nancy passed away in 2001, Jim started on a new adventure restoring antique Ford tractors. He was a member of the South Coast Antique Tractor Club and he could be found at many parades and festivals sharing his love of all things tractor. Jim was a lifelong hunter and he and Kelly shared many seasons together hunting the Tioga Unit in Coos County, the Hart Mountains in Eastern Oregon and two special hunts in Wyoming for mule deer and antelope.
Jim was preceded in death by his wife of 44 years, Nancy; parents, Clarence and Marie Churchill; and in-laws Ernest and Carrie Alice Perrott. He is survived by his daughter Carrie and husband John of Coquille; son Kelly and wife Debbie of Cheyenne; Wyoming, grandson Ryan Cook and his fiancé Allison; granddaughter Allison (Cook) Seeley and her fiancé Trevor; and great-grandson Cooper Seeley.
Private graveside services were held in December. A celebration of Jim’s life will be held on February 17, 2024 at 1 pm in the Parish Hall at St. James Episcopal Church, 210 E. Third Street in Coquille.
