He was born July 14, 1932 at home in Myrtle Point, Oregon to Elton Forrest Aasen & Henrietta Augusta Aasen. He dies of natural causes on May 21,2024.
He graduated high school in 1951 and directly went into the United States Army during the Korean War. On furlough, he married Mary Pingleton. They both returned back to Alaska where he was stationed at Fort Richardson. He was a sharp-shooter and plated trombone in the military band.
While in Alaska, Gerald and Mary gave birth to a daughter, Theresa Ann, in July 1954, at Fort Richardson base in a Quonset hut.
Gerald was a hard, dedicated worker and wonderful provider for his family of five. As a teenager he would haul lumber for his dad’s mill after school and weekends. Upon returning from service, he went to work at a mill in Myrtle Point. He worked 27 years at Norply Lumber Mill where he ran the lathe until they closed. He then worked 22 years to Coos County Road Maintenance, driving truck and paver all over the county, until retirement in July, 1997.
He loved hunting and fishing, plunking for steelhead, deep sea fishing for salmon, halibut, and tuna. In his later years, firewood cutting with his sons was another favorite outing. He was extremely proud of his large inventory.
He and Mary loved to go on rides in the Volkswagen bug all over the country side on a regular basis. He loved to take the travel trailer to Arizona and parts of Eastern Oregon in the Steen Mountains.
He is preceded in death by his loving wife, Mary Aasen, father, Elton Aasen, and mother, Henrietta Aasen.
He is survived by his sister Arlene (Aasen) Morgan of Myrtle Point, Oregon, children Theresa (Aasen) Daniels & Kim Daniels, Linda (Aasen) Campanella & Thomas Campanella, Gary Aasen & Paulette Aasen, and Gregory Aasen, 10 grandchildren; Ryan Daniels, Alyssa Daniels, Aaron Aasen, Andrew Aasen, Adam Aasen, Jeremy Campanella, Michael Campanella, Steven Campanella, Cody Aasen, and Brogan Aasen, and 25 great-grandchildren.
