Gary Nichols Obituary

Gary Nichols, 79, of Bandon, OR, passed away peacefully August 22, 2020 in Bandon, OR, with his family by his side. Apple pie, USA, target practice, quick-witted conversation, dog walks, action movies and enjoying cooking from “the best cook in the west”, his loving wife Charlotte, were just some of his favorite things.

A Celebration of Life will be held at VFW Post 3440, 55382 Bates Rd, Bandon, OR, September 26, 2020, from 12-2P Pacific. The Military Honor Guard will be present.

Gary was born in Belleville, KS, to Wilbur and Darlene Nichols on July 20, 1941. He attended high school at Geneva High School in Geneva, NE, and upon graduation entered the military. Gary served in the Navy and was awarded both a Good Conduct medal and an Expeditionary medal. Gary was a submariner who earned his Dolphins May 1961 on the USS Sargo (SSN-583).

Gary married Charlotte on February 14, 1977. As owners from 1991-2017, they enjoyed many great times and developed many close friendships over the years hosting hunters, fisherman and campers at the Remote Outpost in Remote, OR. While the Remote Outpost delivered on its promise of many projects, Gary also enjoyed his time using his engineering background during his career with Power Engineers from 1999-2016. He held roles in project management and sales during his tenure.

Gary is preceded in death by his parents, Wilbur and Darlene Nichols and his sister Sharon Hughes.

Gary is survived by Charlotte Nichols, his loving wife. Fur baby and constant companion, Heidi. And all of his “kiddos” including Danielle Nichols and her fiancé Jon Mahrt. Michael Nichols. Steve Jones and his wife Pat. Tim Jones and his wife Elaine. Sherry Reeves and Laura Reeves. Brother David Nichols and his wife Zelda, of Murells Inlet, SC. Grandchildren Gabriella Cross and her husband Justin, Maddison Ficke, Nick Jones, Danny Proffitt, Benjamin Jones, Spencer Jones, Audrey Joseph and her husband Amenson and their daughter Eliza, who all lovingly called him “Papa G.”

Memorials may be given to SouthCoast Hospice of Coos Bay, OR, or The V Foundation for Cancer Research.
