Dorothy Margaret Taylor, Coquille, died April 24th 2026, a private burial service will be held by the family.
She was born July 13th, 1926, at Rearden, WA to Roy Furgason and Margaret (O’Halloran) Furgason, pioneers of the Spokane area. Mrs. Taylor was raised at Little Falls on the Spokane River. She Graduated from North Central High in Spokane and attended WSU at Pullman.
She and Albert Backman were married December 12th, 1945, at Little Falls. They went to Moose Pass, Alaska where they attempted homesteading in Seward for a while until they left for the birth of their first child, Juanita. She was born in Cottage Grove, OR. They moved to Coquille in the fall of 1947. Four sons were born: Dale in Coquille, Douglas in Coos Bay at the old McCauley Hospital, Dan and Dennis at the old Mast Hospital in Myrtle Point.
She and Robert Taylor were married in 1985 at Faith Lutheran Church in Coquille. Mrs. Taylor began employment with the Coquille Valley in 1968. She was publisher from 1974 to 1977, leaving for eight years. During that time, she went to Peru as a Spanish interpreter for a gold mining expedition. She held a real estate license for a few years and also worked as chief deputy recorder in the county clerk’s office. She returned to the Sentinel as General Manager in 1990. She left the Sentinel in 1998 to become the interim county clerk for a year before retiring in 1999.
She had ben in member of Faith Lutheran Church in Coquille 50 years, she was a member and past president of the Coquille Rotary Club, past president of the Coquille Valley Soroptimists and on the Private Industry council of the Oregon Consortium until 2000. She was a member of Gloria Dei Luthern Church, Coos Bay. She taught Sunday School and confirmation for many years. She had many hobbies, especially antiques, porcelain painting and genealogy.
Mrs. Taylor is survived by daughter-in-law Betty Backman, son Douglas Backman and wife Sharon Backman, son Dennis Backman and wife Teresa Backman, of Coquille. Daniel Backman and wife Linda Backman, of Brookings Oregon. Stepson Richard Taylor and wife Diane Taylor of Coos Bay. Granddaughters Jenny Forbes, Julie Norris Rencehausen, and Dondi Armstrong. Grandsons Dustin Backman, Nick Backman, Joe Norris, Ed Backman, Jeff Backman, Brian Backman, Jeremy Taylor, Jeff Taylor, Ryan Taylor. And brother Dr. Robert Furguson, Corpus Christi, TX and his wife Gloria Furguson. She was predeceased by her parents, a brother Charles, a sister Virginia, former husband Albert Backman, former husband Robert Taylor, son Dale Backman, daughter Jaunita Backman, and stepson Michael Taylor.
