Christine Calley Obituary

Chris was born November 9, 1943, in Pasadena, California, to Winfield and Ona Muffett, and passed away on November 9, 2025 in Coquille, Oregon surrounded by loved ones.

The eldest of six children, Chris was raised on a dairy farm in Colton, Oregon, where she graduated as valedictorian of her high school class.

She attended the University of Oregon, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology. It was there she met her husband, Charles Deans Calley (Chuck), during their first final freshman year.

They married on March 21, 1964, in Eugene, Oregon. After graduating, Chuck and Chris lived in Liberia, West Africa, for five years — first with the Peace Corps, then in the foreign service. Their first son, Robwin Pattison Calley, was born there on February 1, 1970. They returned to the United States in May 1972 and settled on their tree farm along the North Fork of the Coquille River, in Oregon, where their second son, Jonathan Deans Calley, was born on May 31, 1973.

Chris dedicated her life to her family — an example of selfless love and generosity. Much of her time was spent with her husband, sons, daughters-in-law, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She encouraged them all to pursue their interests and ambitions, always showing her support.

Chris loved sharing her passion for gardening, forestry, and the outdoors. She was well-versed in all kinds of plant life and their many purposes and uses. She also spent time studying and recording family history, sharing her knowledge with her children and grandchildren. She loved traveling the world and cherished time spent exploring many countries and cultures, but she was always happiest returning home to the ranch — to garden, plant trees, work on projects, and float the river in her kayak.

Chris’s professional life included work in finance, OSU Extension, and as a manager at Hardin Optical in Bandon, Oregon, where she worked for 20 years. She was admired and loved by family, friends, and coworkers alike.

She was preceded in death by her brother Dean and sister Nancy. She is survived by her brothers Winfield, Robert, and John, her husband Chuck, her sons and daughters-in-law Robwin and Alicia, and Jonathan and Marsha; grandchildren Hannah, Carlie, Cash, Cruise, Blake, Jessica, and Emma; and great-grandchildren Emerson, Ivy, Ryker, Rowen, Maverick, Slater, Hanson, Mazzy, and Emile.

What a blessing Chris has been. All she taught us will remain with us throughout our lives. She and her husband have built a strong legacy that will carry on for generations.
